Today I’m making this delicious green soup I eat most days for breakfast. It’s healthy, high in nutrients, and great for an Ayurvedic diet.
Ingredients:
1 Quart of Veggie Broth
12 oz of broccoli, chopped
2-3 stalks of celery, chopped
2-3 cups fresh spinach
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp ground tumeric plus extra for serving
Salt to taste
Fresh lemon juice
Red Pepper Flakes
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that means “science of life” or “knowledge of life” and it is one of the world’s oldest healing systems developed thousands of years ago in India.
Ayurveda brings together the balance of your mind, body, spirit and environment to promote good health and prevent, not fight, disease which can literally be translated as DIS-EASE or rather, an absence or the opposite of ease in the body. It speaks to the interconnectedness of everything in the universe and it says that if your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe then you will be in good health.
Ayurveda posits that every living being is made of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These five elements combine in the human body to form life forces called doshas which control how your body works. The three main doshas are Vata dosha which is comprised of space and air; pitta dosha which is fire and water, and kapha dosha which is water and earth.
Everyone is a mix of the three doshas, but one dosha is usually stronger than the others. Similar to how even though everyone has every astrological sign in their natal chart, there are some signs that are more present than others. For example, my astrological sun sign is cancer and so i heavily identify as a cancer. But my natal chart is a wheel composed of every astrological sign so there are parts of my identity that take up the other eleven signs as well. Similarly, I am kapha dosha, but I am also Vata and Pitta dosha. Take the Chopra Institute quiz to find out your dosha.
There have been several questions since I initially posted this recipe on instagram that might come up for you as you decide whether or not this recipe works for you. I am by no means an Ayurvedic expert and but here are some basic resources if you are interested in learning more about Ayurvedic techniques and recipes.
